Hydrogen Salt Storage Assessment Project
Assessing Hydrogen Storage Potential Within Manmade Salt Caverns
This project will locate and assess the extent of geological salt formations offshore Ireland using existing oil and gas datasets and evaluate the potential for man-made salt caverns for hydrogen storage, in collaboration with Offshore Renewable Energy companies.
The project is an innovative use of existing data to support solutions to technical and other barriers to offshore energy uptake, in particular the problem of dispatch down and the potential for net energy export solutions. The project deliverables will also provide guidance to policy makers on locations which are suitable for hydrogen storage (and potentially CCS) in geological salt formations offshore Ireland.
This project has been supported with financial contribution from Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland and Geological Survey Ireland under the SEAI Research, Development & Demonstration Funding Programme 2021, Grant number 21/RDD/725.
