Hydrogen Salt Storage Assessment(HYSS)

About This Project

The HYSS project investigated the potential for hydrogen storage in salt caverns offshore Ireland. The work was conducted between 2022 and 2024 and funded by SEAI and the GSI under grant agreement 21/RDD/673.

Project Synopsis

The project employed experienced seismic interpreters, geologists and geophysicists to analyse the existing oil and gas well and seismic datasets to identify naturally occurring salt which was considered of sufficient thickness and depth to be suitable for the creation of man-made salt caverns. A suite of maps were prepared as deliverables that define the locations that are potentially suitable for salt cavern development. A full GIS database was also created to analyse potential surface and sub-surface constraints such as fishing activity, seabed conditions, and shallow hazards.
